Update|Police charge father of girl whose burnt remains found behind house

The father of 14-year-old Shantina Sergeant, whose burnt and partially decomposed body was found behind her home in Clarendon, has been charged with her murder.

Charged is 46-year-old Lawrence Sergeant, who had been in custody for several weeks. His court date is now being finalised.

Police say Shantina was reported missing at the Christiana Police Station on Thursday, October 3. A search was carried out at her home on Monday, October 6, where skeletal remains were discovered in bushes at the back of the property.

Investigators later launched a manhunt for her father, who reportedly fled the area after the discovery. He was captured in Old Harbour, St Catherine, on Friday, October 10.

A post-mortem confirmed that the remains were that of the missing teen.
