Police personnel and a community member clear debris caused by Hurricane Melissa, in the Guanaboa Vale community in St Catherine yesterday.

The police and community members have cleared debris from the roadway leading to the St Catherine-based Guanaboa Vale Primary School, caused by the passage of Hurricane Melissa on October 28.

During a community workday yesterday to restore normalcy in the aftermath of the storm, head of the Guanaboa Vale police, Sergeant Navelette Davis-Leachman, told JIS News that they wanted to try and prevent motor-vehicle collisions.

"Based on the fact that the bridge is very narrow, we wanted to clear the debris so that motorists are able to pass freely. I am elated that I got the full support from my team, and it is a pleasure having everyone on board," she added. Davis-Leachman said she was also pleased with the community members' involvement in the initiative.

"This will help in boosting our community engagement, where the citizens will realise that we are here not just to arrest but to actually serve the community in a meaningful way," she said.

The school's principal Tracey-Ann Brown said clearing the roadway will make it safer for motorists and her students.

"After the passage of Hurricane Melissa, we had a lot of debris on the road, and it rendered us having to use one lane, which posed a problem for motorists and pedestrians," she said.
