Chapelton Maroons notch third straight win
Chapelton Maroons FC climbed to the top of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) points table after a close 3-2 victory over Portmore United FC at Turner's Oval, for their third win in three matches.
Chapelton have nine points owing to their perfect start, and they are two points clear of Montego Bay United FC, and three ahead of former leaders Racing United FC, whose game against Mount Pleasant Football Academy was postponed.
Shemron Phillips fired Chapelton Maroons in front after 19 minutes, but Rashaun Small equalised five minutes before the half, for a 1-1 score at the break.
Goals from Andrew Vanzie (60th) and Marcos Roas Filho (74th) put the Maroons 3-1 up in the second half, which proved decisive.
Ramone Howell reduced the deficit by scoring in added time for Portmore United, but it proved to be too little, too late for the visitors.
FIRST WIN
At Drewsland Mini Stadium, Arnett Gardens FC dismissed Harbour View FC 5-2 for their first win in three matches.
Rushike Kelson handed Arnett Gardens the lead in the 36th minute. But Omar Thompson (41st) made it 1-1 at half time.
Fabian Reid scored at the 48th minute to restore Arnett's lead three minutes after the break. However, Rohan Brown responded with a 51st minute equaliser for Harbour View.
Arnett Gardens, however, fired three unanswered goals through Tyrique Jones (60th), Reid (76th) and Jamone Shepherd (90+) to take all the points.
"This was a game we needed to win," said Arnett Gardens FC's coach Philip Williams, after his team had lost their two prior matches.
"We wanted it more than them today. We are seeing a more complete performance now. The players who came in late are running into fitness and you will see a better Arnett team going forward, the longer the season goes," he said.
Harbour View's coach Bjorn Thomas said defensive errors cost his team.
"I don't think the margin of the defeat told the whole story. The performance wasn't that bad, but we just conceded at the wrong times in the game," Thomas said.
"We made some errors. We just have to look at the videos and see how we can fix things going forward," he commented.
GOOD START
Montego Bay United also continued their good start to the season, with a 2-1 win away to Dunbeholden FC.
Leonard Rankine's 53rd minute own goal put the hosts in front. But late strikes from Lucas Lima (79th) and Dwight Merrick (89th) saw MoBay to victory.
In the other game, at STETHS, hosts Treasure Beach FC and Molynes United FC played out an exciting four-goal thriller, in a 2-2 draw.
Marlon Pennicooke put Molynes United ahead in the 67th minute, but Raheem Porter equalised in the 69th.
Two minutes later, Enrique Gordon restored Molynes ' advantage. But Kevoan McGregor salvaged a point from Treasure Beach with an added-time equaliser.
