Woman allegedly torches ex-boyfriend’s home
A mother of one will have to spend another week in custody before her fate is decided, as she is facing allegations that she set fire to her ex-boyfriend's home following a verbal dispute.
Ava-Gaye Mitchell was remanded in custody until July 23, after making her first appearance in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish on Thursday. It is alleged that on June 5, about 11 p.m., residents of a Corporate Area premises, who are the complainants in the case, were alerted to a fire raging at a section of the premises. Units from the York Park and Rollington Town fire departments extinguished the blaze. The damage is said to be more than $1 million.
Investigations by the Kingston Central police indicate that Mitchell was in a relationship with one of the complainants for more than two years. The complainant indicated that he and Mitchell would have arguments, oftentimes about him visiting the mother of his children and accusations of him being unfaithful.
The complainant stated that on June 5, he had an argument with Mitchell and left his home to visit his children. Sometime thereafter, he was alerted to the fire at his home. It is alleged that Mitchell sent him a voicenote the following day, saying, "Big waste man yuh nuh lef me wid nothing so yuh nah go ********** lef we nothing. Me sorry yuh never inna the house too *****."
She was subsequently arrested and charged with arson. She did not enter a plea on her first appearance in court before Parish Judge Natalie Ebanks-Miller on Thursday.
