There is still no evidence to indicate if it was a member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) or a gunman who fired the shot that killed Susan Bogle earlier this year.

At a press conference yesterday, hosted by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), Hamish Campbell, the organisation's assistant commissioner, stated that the investigation is almost complete but at this stage, it is not possible to ascertain who was responsible.

Bogle, 44, was shot during a police-military operation in August Town on May 27.

"The security forces attended to the scene on hearing gunshots and responded to that location where the shots were being fired. On arrival, the police and soldiers all described a number of gunmen with handguns and long weapons within the yard area," he said. "They reported that two soldiers fired their weapons after coming under gunfire. It is not possible to determine whether Ms Bogle was shot and injured prior to the security forces arriving there or if she was shot by gunmen or fatally wounded by the security forces."

The INDECOM autopsy, conducted on June 12, was performed by a government pathologist with an independent observer present, at the request of the family. It revealed that Bogle received a single gunshot wound to her chest which exited through her back.

Campbell said that the incident scene was visited on four occasions, and ballistic and other materials were recovered. He also stated that the full crime scene analysis was completed and the scene visited with the soldiers who were present at the time of the incident.

"They explained where they were when they fired and what is that they saw. Fourteen security forces members have been interviewed, eight of which came from the JDF. All 14 weapons belonging to the police and soldiers were seized and submitted to the lab. Seven of them were M16 rifles and the other seven were 9mm pistols. Two JDF personnel admitted to firing their weapons," he said. Campbell said that no eyewitnesses have come forward.

"There were nine 5.56 casings recovered from the scene along with three 9mm casings. Five of those 5.56 M16 rounds were linked to one JDF weapon but the remaining cases were not associated with any security forces weapon. One of the cases clearly was from a M16 rifle but not one belonging to the security forces, and three 9mm casings recovered did not belong to any of the weapons submitted to the lab either," Campbell added.
